Dorfman Karate is one of South Africa’s most accomplished and respected karate organisations, known for producing top-tier martial artists and world champions. With dojos based in Melrose and Parktown North, we provide world-class training to students of all ages and levels—whether you’re looking for karate lessons for beginners, kids karate classes, adult self-defence, or elite martial arts competition training.
Founded by Shihan Malcolm Dorfman and Dr Shane Dorfman Shihan, Dorfman Karate upholds the highest international standards in traditional Shotokan karate, while nurturing discipline, focus, and inner strength.
Dorfman Karate is affiliated with the Karatenomichi World Federation (KWF), a prestigious global organisation known for its traditional and technically rigorous karate standards. Under the leadership of Malcolm Dorfman Shihan, Chief Instructor of KWF South Africa and Regional Director for Africa & Asia of the World Shotokan Karatedo Association (WSKA), our students gain direct access to international grading and competitive opportunities.
Our dojos have a long-standing legacy of excellence. Dorfman Karate students consistently excel at local and international competitions, with recent victories at the KWF World Championships and KWF SA Junior Champs. From junior white belts to black belt Dan rankings, every student is guided to reach their full potential.
At Dorfman Karate, earning a black belt is more than an achievement – it’s a testament to years of commitment, discipline, and personal growth.
Our black belts form the backbone of our dojo’s legacy, embodying the values of Shotokan karate and setting an example for all students. From Shodan (1st Dan) to Godan (5th Dan) and beyond, each of these individuals has shown exceptional perseverance and skill.
We are proud to honour their journeys and invite you to learn from their experience, leadership, and spirit.
Headed by Malcolm Dorfman Shihan, 9th Dan KWF Deputy Grandmaster and international Shotokan authority.
Led by Dr Shane Dorfman, 8-time world karate champion and Japanese-certified instructor.
At Dorfman Karate, we teach Shotokan Karate, one of the most traditional and widely practiced styles of Japanese karate. Known for its deep stances, powerful linear techniques, and strong emphasis on discipline, Shotokan is a style that builds both physical strength and mental focus. Our training includes kihon (fundamental techniques), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring), following the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan. Through this disciplined and structured approach, students develop precision, respect, and a deep understanding of martial arts.
Karate improves fitness, flexibility, self-discipline, confidence, and self-defense skills. It also enhances focus and mental strength.
