Frequently asked question

Can I watch a class before signing up?

Yes! We encourage you to visit and observe a session before deciding. Better still, join us for a FREE introduction lesson!

Wear comfortable athletic clothing (like a T-shirt and sweatpants). If you continue training, you will need a Karate gi (uniform), which can be purchased later.

Achieving a black belt depends on dedication and practice. On average, it can take 4-6 years with consistent training.

Students progress through belt ranks by demonstrating their skills in grading tests. Each belt represents a level of proficiency in techniques, katas, and sparring.

Beginners start with a White belt and progress through 9 ranks culminating in a recieving Black belt rank.

Competition is optional but highly encouraged as it helps improve confidence, technique, and experience under pressure. There are several competitions run throughout the year including the Dorfman Dojo Championship, which is a great introduction to competitive Karate, and the South African KWF Championship, where all KWF Dojos compete in a number of disciplines.

Dorfman Karate Institute offers termly memberships for Kiddies (age 4 to 6) and monthly membership for all other ages, with discounts offered for upfront payment.
